“Should I be worried about U.S. tariffs affecting the cost of my renovation?”
Lately, many homeowners and clients have been asking this question and it is a valid concern. Trade policies shift, and when they do, the cost of imported goods can spike overnight. While we can’t predict exactly how things will unfold, there’s one ideal way to sidestep the issue: buy Canadian.
The good news is that Canada is home to a wide range of incredible manufacturers and suppliers for plumbing, flooring, lighting, and more. Sourcing locally doesn’t just help you avoid potential cost increase, it also supports Canadian businesses and helps reduce long shipping delays.

Tiles
While most tiles are imported and aren’t specifically made in Canada, the suppliers below have confirmed that their pricing is not impacted by U.S. tariffs (exclusive information just for you!) This means you can enjoy quality yet cost-effective options without the worry about international trade issues.
Proudly Canadian-owned and operated company for over a century! Ames primarily stocks tiles from either Asian or European manufacturers (not subject to any additional tariffs)
Direct imports from Italy and Spain (not affected by the tariffs)
Imports from Italy, Spain and China (no tariffs or additional cost to any of the materials)
Materials mostly from Europe, Turkey, China etc… (no tariff impact that we are aware of)
Countertops
For beautiful countertops, consider:
- HanStone Quartz
- Vancouver Island Marble (Available through Margranite)
Cabinetry
Custom cabinetry products will vary based on where your local company sources its products. Some manufacturers are starting to notify clients about how tariffs could affect pricing. While other are already offering alternatives for boards and accessories made in Canada to help avoid additional costs. These are uncertain times, and while our suppliers are collaborating with us, things could change. (Note: Keep checking back, as I’ll update this list as I receive more information!)

Final Thoughts
Even with the current climate, many US companies are also being affected by these trade policies. The good thing is that designers typically have strong relationships with the vendors that provide US products. For example I recently received an email from Phillip Jeffries (a wallpaper company) saying:
“We are absorbing cost increases due to potential tariffs and are not passing costs on to customers. I will have more information for you this week, but rest assured, we will do our part to make sure these increases are not passed on to our clients. We value our strong relationship with Canada.”
So before deciding to completely avoid US products, it’s worth finding out which companies are willing to work together and committed to help you manage the potential impact of tariffs.
All businesses are being affected and as a designer, my goal is to support loyal companies we worked with for over a decade because they will do their best to make sure the impact to you as a consumer is as minimal as possible.
So, if you’re planning a renovation and want to source Canadian-made products, this list is a great starting point. Working with a designer who has close relationships with local suppliers means you’ll get access to quality materials without unnecessary markups—and most importantly, we won’t blow up your budget.
