What should I know before starting a bathroom renovation?

01

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

02
Most bathroom renovations follow two phases: design and construction.

Custom design typically takes 2–5 weeks, depending on how quickly decisions are made and how detailed your project is (ir: does it require a building permit). Construction usually takes 7–9+ weeks, assuming materials are pre-ordered and trade schedules run smoothly. Unexpected repairs (like rot) can extend this timeline.

If you’re on a tight schedule and want a faster design turnaround, you have two options—as long as your bathroom layout is not changing:

  • Downloadable Bathroom Design Guides: instantly delivered, with curated finishes and contractor-ready specifications.
  • VIP Design Immersion Day: a 48-hour custom design package where we create a full bathroom concept, finishes, and specifications for you.

If your project involves layout changes, custom design support is needed and the 2–4 week design timeline applies.

For a full step-by-step breakdown of what happens each week, the Bathroom Ready-to-Reno Kit includes the detailed renovation timeline.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom renovation?

04

What is the most expensive part of a bathroom  renovation?

05
The most expensive item in a bathroom renovation is typically plumbing fixtures, however the most common unexpected cost in a bathroom renovation is rot repair. It often shows up around old tubs and showers, and if it’s discovered, it needs to be fixed before the renovation can continue. Other hidden (or rarely discussed) costs can include:

  • Fixing squeaky floors or leveling uneven subfloors
  • Updating out-of-code plumbing or venting
  • Electrical upgrades that are required to meet current standards

One thing many homeowners overlook is soundproofing. If bathroom noise transfer is already an issue, talk to your contractor early about insulation options. It’s frustrating to complete a beautiful renovation only to realize the noise concerns weren’t addressed.

Our Bathroom Ready-to-Reno Kit includes a full list of hidden and commonly overlooked costs so you can build a more realistic budget from the start.

Kitchen questions

What costs the most in a kitchen renovation?

01

What are the steps of a kitchen renovation?

02
Every kitchen renovation follows the same general order:

  • Initial measurements and design planning
  • Permit submission document creation and submission (when required)
  • Appliance selections
  • Cabinet layouts and storage planning
  • Material selections (countertops, tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting, hardware)
  • Ordering and lead-time planning
  • Demolition
  • Rough-in work (plumbing, electrical, HVAC)
  • Drywall and flooring installation
  • Cabinet shop drawings and install,
  • Countertop templating and install
  • Backsplash installation
  • Fixtures, lighting, and hardware install
  • Final touches and deficiency fixes

It feels like a lot because there are more trades and moving parts in a kitchen than almost any other room in the house.

If you want the general step-by-step overview of how this process works, the Kitchen Ready-to-Reno Kit walks you through the full timeline in more detail so you know what to expect and when.

If you’re planning to DIY the kitchen design yourself but want to save hours of research, the Kitchens 101 Masterclass walks you through the key things to think about for kitchen cabinetry design, layouts, and materials. It’s the same masterclass I share with my full-service and VIP Design Day clients so they feel fully informed while we work through their kitchen design package.

How do I choose kitchen finishes without going over budget?

03
A great place to start is by creating a Scope of Work that outlines exactly what is staying, what is being removed, and your main goals for the space (more storage, better flow, brighter, etc.). You can use our Scope of Work Template  for this. Once you’ve outlined the scope, you can ask a contractor for a conceptual budget before you dive into full design. This isn’t a detailed quote, but it will give you an educated starting point so you know whether you’re heading toward a $XX range or a $XX range before you get too far.

From there, it helps to think about your budget in a few main categories:
  • Design: Whether you use a design guide, a VIP Design Day, or full-service design, set aside an allowance for your full design package. Having a complete design up front prevents costly changes once construction starts.
  • Pre-construction: Inspections (if needed), document gathering, permit submission, and contractor quoting. This is the prep work that sets your project up for a smoother build.
  • Materials & labour: Cabinets, countertops, appliances, plumbing fixtures, tile, flooring, lighting, and the trades who install them. This is usually the largest portion of the budget.
  • Decor & accessories: Stools, window coverings, and styling pieces that make the space feel finished.

To stay on budget, decide where you want to invest (often cabinetry and countertops) and where you’re comfortable saving (for example, simpler backsplash tile or standard hardware). Make those big decisions first, then choose supporting finishes that fit within the numbers you’ve already set.

If you want a clearer structure for these decisions, the Kitchen Ready-to-Reno Kit walks through budget considerations and the order decisions should be made. In the Kitchens 101 Masterclass, we go deeper into cabinetry, layouts, and materials—and it includes a bonus email template you can use to request a comprehensive kitchen quote from contractors after your design is complete but before you start demo.

How do I know if I need full-service interior design for my kitchen renovation?

04
It usually comes down to the scope of your project and how many decisions you want support with. If you’re changing the layout, moving walls or plumbing, or opening anything structural, it’s likely that you’ll need a building permit—and this is where full-service design and proper construction drawings become important. Certified interior designers (not interior decorators) are trained to create these permit-ready drawing packages and coordinate with engineers and contractors so everything aligns with code and construction requirements.

Even if you don’t need a permit package, there’s still a lot of value in working with an experienced designer. Having a designer is so much more than having someone to help you pick finishes. We look at how you use your kitchen day to day, where storage is (and isn’t) working, how traffic flows through the space, and what’s going to matter to you five or ten years from now—not just on reveal day.

Where experience really makes a difference is in the small (but important) details and material choices. For example, we might suggest using a piece of your quartz countertop off-cut as the window sill instead of wood because we noticed you already set your dish soap on the ledge and the existing sill is starting to warp. That tiny change makes day-to-day life easier and reduces future maintenance. The same applies to bigger decisions: knowing which materials perform well, which upgrades are worth it, and where you can save. After designing hundreds of kitchens, we can often suggest alternatives that still achieve your look and function while sometimes saving you thousands.

Our full-service kitchen design packages start at $4,500 + GST, and are typically the best fit for projects involving layout changes or more complex renovations (you can listen to our free podcast for more info). If you’re not looking for full-service support but still value professional design experience, we have two more affordable places to start: the Kitchens 101 Masterclass (perfect for DIY enthusiasts who want to feel informed before making decisions) and our Kitchen Design Guides (ideal for busy homeowners who want everything they need ready at the click of a button).
