Let’s be real for a second— a bathroom renovation is never cheap, and it’s only natural to want to save money wherever you can. But there’s one area where I always tell my clients: don’t cut corners on tile installation.

Sure, it might seem like a harmless way to trim down your budget, but the reality is that poor tile work can lead to big headaches later on—think cracked tiles, water damage, wonky grout lines, and a bathroom that just doesn’t have that polished, designer finish.

In this post, I’ll walk you through why choosing a qualified installer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, how to avoid costly mistakes, and (of course!) some design inspiration to get your creative juices flowing.

The Importance of a Qualified Tile Installer

Tile isn’t just about picking something pretty; it’s one of the most critical parts of your bathroom’s functionality.

A poorly installed tile job doesn’t just look bad—it can lead to serious issues like water damage, uneven surfaces, and tiles that crack or shift over time. Hiring a qualified tile installer is an investment in long-term durability and a flawless finish. From perfectly even grout lines to properly aligned tiles, a skilled installer makes the difference between a bathroom that’s just “okay” and one that’s truly stunning.

Trust me, after more than a decade in residential design, I’ve seen firsthand how quality craftsmanship can make or break a bathroom. And believe me, it’s always worth it.

You want to feel a sense of relief when you enter your bathroom, not have your eye go to a detail that you hate.

Common Bathroom Renovation Mistakes (That Cost You in the Long Run)

I get it—when you’re tackling a bathroom reno, it’s tempting to go with the cheapest option, or maybe even get your handy friend to do it. But let me tell you, when it comes to your shower, this is one area you really need to get right.

A tile shower installation involves so much more than just choosing pretty tiles. From the waterproof membrane (I always recommend Schluter products) to how the tiles are cut, to the type of grout used, and even the expandable silicone on exterior walls that prevents cracking grout, every detail matters.

Not to mention, creating those beautiful mitred edges or getting the niche just right requires skill.

I’ve seen my fair share of DIY tile jobs, and the biggest issues I come across include:

  • Uneven grout or crooked tile
  • Unfinished porcelain tile edges
  • Excessive calking to cover up incorrect tile cuts

But the worst? When the waterproof membrane or shower drain isn’t done properly. I’ve seen beautiful bathrooms flood because of poor installation, and that’s a nightmare no one wants to deal with after a reno! 😳

Before saving a few bucks on tile installation, remember a skilled installer does more than straighten grout lines. They ensure your bathroom functions properly for years. It’s an investment in durability and beauty, and you’ll appreciate it every time you step into your shower.

Bathroom Tile Design Tips for New Homeowners

When selecting the perfect shower tile, here are three key things to consider:

1. Your Living Situation
Do you have young kids, pets, and little time for maintenance? Even if you love marble, it may not be ideal for your shower. Natural stones need more upkeep to prevent stains and damage.

But if you have a weekly cleaner or don’t mind the maintenance, go for it!

2. Safety Considerations
Think about the people in your home. Young kids and aging adults are more likely to slip on tile floors. That’s why I recommend a matte or natural finish for floors and showers. It reduces the chances of slipping, though it’s still possible.

I get that some designs call for a glossy finish, but before committing, make sure you understand how slippery it might be. The goal is for you to love the look of your bathroom while feeling like every choice was made for your lifestyle.

Of course, style matters! For wall tiles, the material and look play a huge role in the final result.

Quick tip: If you’re using large-format tiles with veining, lay the tiles out in advance to see which order looks best. I did this in my last reno—you can check it out here.

When it comes to the finishing touches, here’s what makes a shower feel professional:

  • Mitred corners (though textured tiles may not work well for this).
  • Grout colors that blend with the tile base.
  • Linear corner niches, with the bottom shelf 16-18 inches off the floor (perfect for resting your foot while shaving!).
